EPO – Oral proceedings by videoconference in opposition

The European Patent Office has decided to postpone all oral proceedings in opposition scheduled to take place between now and 31 December 2020, where such proceedings either a) have not already been confirmed to take place by videoconference or b) will be held by videoconference with the parties' consent under the EPO’s pilot project. As of next year, oral proceedings in opposition are intended to resume on the premises of the EPO. Oral proceedings in examination will continue to be held by videoconference.

In appeal proceedings, oral proceedings by videoconference are possible as well, but will not necessarily be held in this way. Regarding the date and location of scheduled oral proceedings in appeal proceedings, parties are encouraged to check the Board of Appeal calendar regarding scheduling and location of oral proceedings, as such changes may not be communicated to the parties.
