Expertise

Michael Heise has represented clients in patent law for over two decades, primarily in software, information technology, and telecommunications.

His experience is mainly based on advising leading international companies and patent applicants on developing strategic patent portfolios and on a remarkably high number of complex and extensive appeal and opposition proceedings, mainly before the European Patent Office and its Boards of Appeal.

In addition, Michael advises on patent infringement and nullity proceedings. His primary focus is obtaining and defending patents in the software area and the frontier area of technicality. Other technical areas of focus include patents in the fields of audio and video coding, cryptography, file systems, AI and digital communications.

Michael is characterised by his comprehensive expertise in patent law, particularly case law, and his outstanding technical understanding.

While studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, Michael completed PhD courses in Pattern Recognition, Neural Networks and Digital Communications at Virginia Tech. Michael worked for a leading global company on an encryption layer for a file system, which further strengthened his profound technical understanding for counselling on patent matters.
